Biblical Conflict Management
This course intends to teach students how to handle conflicts in a positive and productive manner from the biblical perspective. Students are encouraged to begin all discussions with prayer before trying to resolve any situation. The biblical conflict management course teaches students that a problem cannot be resolved until the facts are known which often requires critical thinking so that a reasonable solution is found which is acceptable to the parties involved.
The course also gives students an understanding how conflict develops and teaches them skills for the resolution of those situations. The aim of this course is to teach students alternative interpersonal skills for dealing with conflicts. They will be helped in developing critical thinking skills for problem solving by looking at issues with different perspectives and dealing with those issues in a positive and constructive manner before they escalate into destructive situations.
Since misunderstanding in communication is one of the main factors that usually result in conflicts, the purpose of this course is to teach students how to listen and reflect before responding to a disturbing situation which affects them.
Students will gain knowledge concerning the reasons why some people behave unethically, which could be differences in their personalities; and often it could be lack of personal needs. When those needs are unmet, people behave in ways, which are often unsociable causing unethical interpersonal problems. When we seek for guidance before making any decisions, we will be led by the Holy Spirit Who will teach us how to handle every situation with wisdom.
Instructions from the Word concerning how we are to deal with conflict situations.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high (places).”
Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Romans 12:10
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high (places).” Ephesians 6:12.
“And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all (men), apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And (that) they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” (2 Timothy 2:24-26).
What is Conflict?
Conflict is a situation which takes place every day either with others or within ourselves. While conflict is a regular occurrence, there are ways in which they can be dealt with either effectively or ineffectively. The word teaches that we should do everything in decency and in order, but we often miss the mark, and this is why conflicts develop. Despite their development, there are ways in which we can cause those events to escalate to create disorder because of confusion about an event or personal grievances.
A note of caution, you cannot fix a problem until you know what it is about! It would be wise to begin with prayer before any discussion. Through the power of prayer, the Holy Spirit gives discernment and wisdom for a response and application.
Since misunderstandings in communication is one of the main factors to cause conflicts, the purpose of this course is to teach students how to listen and respond effectively to an event (James 1:19). Other reasons why conflicts develop is thoughtlessness concerning the response given to a situation. There could also be differences in personalities, and beliefs.
These and other situations such as lack of personal needs often develop into conflicts. When needs are unmet, people act in ways, which are often unsociable causing unethical interpersonal problems. Despite the situation, each person should know how to conduct himself or herself in a reasonable manner so that relevant discussions can take place to resolve a dispute.
What does the Word Say?
As the inspired Word of God, the Bible has answers for all of life’s situations which we all face on a daily basis. Therefore, we should seek to find out what the Word says about the difficulties which confront us in all of our interactions with others. We should not ignore an encounter when we are challenged to answer for our own deeds or when others offended us. What makes the difference is our response to the individual or to the situation. If we place the burden on the situation, we may succeed in our response.
However, when we direct our feelings onto others this is where conflicts develop. What is also very important will be how we deal with those events. This is why a course in conflict management is so vital whether it is knowing how to respond to family a member or a colleague without creating or escalating an ongoing conflict situation.
The Bible has answers for many of the situations which we face in life.
